“The shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” Luke 2:15
Read this verse over and over. What is God whispering to you?
This morning God is reminding me that He can tell great things but if we don’t go and tell others it losses it’s power. It is one thing to hear God or a message from God, it is quite another to react to it. I know some of you think you have never heard from God. I ask you this, have you heard the Bible read? have you read the Bible? Has anyone spoken to you? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you have heard from God.
God relays His message through many means. In our verse Angels told the shepherds. The Greek word for angel is aggelos which means messenger. It is sometimes translated to pastor. In other words, a messenger from God appeared to the shepherds. The word appeared can also mean was present or stood amongst. This messenger could have looked like any of us. We assume it was a heavenly angel because after the pronouncement heavenly hosts appeared. This is the word that makes it clear that they were heavenly beings involved. What could have happened was the messenger came walking amongst them and pronounced the birth of Christ then that messenger was sounded by angels to support what was said. If you think about it in this manner it makes it a little easier to be there. We could experience the same thing. Someone could easily be used to give us a message from God. Will you listen? Will you go?
The shepherds heard the message then they reacted to it. They went and saw Jesus. Then they did the unthinkable, they went and told everyone about it. Shepherds weren’t people of great standing. They were the low of the low. They were no body. Often thought of as worth less than the flocks they guarded. Yet here God uses them. Their story is told across the world for centuries. We can no longer think we aren’t good enough. We can’t use the excuse that no one will listen to us. We can’t assume that God can’t use us. After all he used lowly Shepherds.
It is our turn. Don’t just keep Jesus to yourself. Go out with great joy and proclaim the good news. Jesus is born. Your sins are forgiven. God loves you. Don’t just speak it, live it. Believe it. Now go!
